Society Events

The following special Society activities have been planned and require a fee in addition to the Experimental Biology 2008 registration fee. If you plan to attend any of these activities, please note where and how to register.

APS Opening Reception – Saturday, April 5

Immediately following the Physiology in Perspectives— Walter B. Cannon Memorial Award Lecture at 5:45 PM on Saturday, April 5, 2008. APS will be hosting a reception on the Center Terrace of the San Diego Convention Center. The reception will feature jazz musicians, a light dinner buffet and beverage. Tickets will be required for entry; the event is free for APS members and those expressing interest in physiology on their registration form. Please indicate your intent to attend on the Experimental Biology 2008 registration form.

ASPET 100th Birthday Party – Monday, April 7

Come celebrate with us at the party of the century! To celebrate its 100th anniversary, ASPET is holding a huge birthday bash in San Diego on Monday evening, April 7 (Visit the ASPET website www.aspet.org for details of the exciting venue that will be representative of the San Diego Area). Partyers can get their picture taken with the Society founder John Jacob Abel, network with friends and colleagues, and of course, eat, drink and be merry! Dinner, two drinks, and birthday cake are included! The birthday party is a ticketed event, open to all EB registrants, so come one, come all! The cost to ASPET members and their families is $25 per person or $15 for ASPET student members. The cost to all other EB registrants is $35. Space is limited and costs will increase by $10 after February 6, 2008. Ticket exchange vouchers will be included with your registration materials and badge. Don’t miss this memorable event! ASPET 3rd RGS Protein Colloquium – Friday-Saturday, April 4-5

The third in this series of meetings exploring RGS Proteins will focus on the advances in molecular complexes involved in RGS protein function and in vivo and human genetic studies revealing the role of RGS proteins in disease. The meeting is designed to foster productive interactions between academic investigators and researchers representing the pharmaceutical industry as well as bringing in a diverse set of speakers with a number of exciting junior individuals. ASPET COLLOQUIUM: Recent Advances in Muscarinic Receptor Pharmacology and Therapeutics – Friday-Saturday, April 4-5

The tenth symposium in a series focusing on different muscarinic receptor subtypes, this meeting will bring together basic and clinical scientists, those studying muscarinic receptor structure and function, and those working in related areas of signal transduction to facilitate a multidisciplinary exchange of ideas and techniques directed towards melding basic molecular knowledge with clinical application. 16th Annual AAA Awards Banquet & Reception – Tuesday, April 8

The American Association of Anatomists cordially requests the pleasure of your company at the 16th Annual AAA Awards Banquet on Tuesday, April 8, 2008. The Banquet—from 7 to 10 p.m. at the San Diego Marriott Hotel—will feature a cocktail reception, dinner, live music, and presentation of AAA awards. Tickets ($60) may be purchased online (deadline, March 15) when you register for the Experimental Biology (EB) meeting or via the AAA Website (www.anatomy.org). Tickets will not be sold on-site at the meeting.

ASBMB and HCS Special Events

The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and The Histochemical Society (HCS) will include, as part of this meeting, the following events requiring advanced registration. All ASBMB and EB participants are invited to attend. Please check the appropriate box when registering. Space is limited therefore we suggest you register for these events early. ASBMB 5K Fun Run – Sunday, April 6

The ASBMB 5K Fun Run will be held Sunday, April 6 at 7:00 AM. The course will take runners and walkers through San Diego’s beautiful Embarcadero Marina Park. The run entry fee is $20 for ASBMB members and $25 for all other EB registrants. Space is limited and advance registration is required. There will be NO same-day registration. The Fun Run will be held rain or shine. Refreshments will be available for registered participants and prizes will be awarded to the first place male and female finishers. Registered runners/walkers will receive a ticket for the Fun Run with their meeting badge. Logistical information will be emailed directly to registered runners following the early registration deadline. Tickets may be purchased online when registering for Experimental Biology 2008.

How to Publish in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, (JBC) Workshop – Sunday, April 6

The JBC is hosting a lunchtime workshop for authors interested in submitting their work to the Journal for the first time. This workshop will be led by JBC Associate Editors. Space is limited and advance registration is required by the early registration deadline, February 6. Registration fee includes lunch: $10 for ASBMB members and $15 for all other EB registrants. There will be NO on-site registration. Registered workshop attendees will receive a ticket for the workshop with their meeting badge. Registrants will be contacted via email with location details (within walking distance of the Convention Center) following the early registration deadline. Tickets may be purchased online when registering for Experimental Biology 2008.

ASBMB Graduate/Postdoctoral Professional Development Program – Saturday, April 5

This special pre-meeting program includes a session on Career Options with separate afternoon professional development workshops for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows. Networking opportunities include a luncheon and post-event reception. Registered mentors are welcome to join their students/postdocs.  Registration, $20 for ASBMB Members and $25 for all other EB registrants, includes lunch and reception.  ** ASBMB Graduate Minority and Graduate/Postdoctoral Travel Award recipients receive complimentary registration to this event.

Principles and Application of Immunocytochemistry, The Histochemical Society (HCS) Short Course Saturday, April 5, 8AM-5PM, San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina

The Histochemical Society is offering a course in the techniques of immunocytochemistry that is aimed at investigators and students who are new to the field but will also be useful for experienced investigators. The course will provide an understanding of the basic principles and applications of immunocytochemistry for research in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology and pathology. Space is limited and advance registration is required by February 15, 2008. There will be no on-site registration. Registration is $250 for graduate students and $300 for all others. Registration includes all course materials, breaks and lunch. Registration includes all course materials, refreshment breaks and lunch. AANP Satellite Meeting: Molecular Embryology to CNS Malformations – Friday, April 4

This one day course is designed to update and review advances in the molecular basis of neural development. Neural tube closure, the cerebellum, axon pathfinding, and forebrain patterning have been selected as the specific topics to be discussed. Accompanying each of these presentations will be an update on the human neuropathologic conditions resulting from deviations in normal development. The goal of this meeting will be to gain an integrative understanding of a variety of human brain disorders from the molecular, developmental, and pathologic perspectives. AAI Mini Course: Communication: The Science of Scientific Writing – Saturday, April 5, 12 PM

Instructor: Judith A. Swan, Assistant Director for Scientific and Technical Writing, Princeton Writing Program, Princeton University Improve the quality of your publications and grant applications! This half-day workshop will focus on the perspective of scientific writing that matters most — that of the reader. Attendees will learn strategies for communicating clearly and gain new perspectives on excellent writing through examples and interactive class participation. AAI Careers Roundtable Discussion – Sunday, April 6, 1:30-3:30 PM. Co-sponsored by the AAI Education Committee and the Committee on the Status of Women

Experienced scientists will serve as roundtable discussion leaders on specific career options and issues important to men and women in science today. Attendance is limited to 350 registrants (students, postdocs, faculty, and staff). Men are encouraged to participate. A $10.00 registration fee includes dessert and coffee. Tickets may be purchased online when registering for Experimental Biology 2008.
